Arthritis in Old Age

Arthritis is a common disease especially affecting old people. It attacks the joints in the body and makes movement difficult.  The warning signs of arthritis are: joint pain, stiffness, swelling, pain while touching joints, redness in joint, movement problems etc.

If these issues lasts more than 2 weeks, you have to see a rheumatologist or your doctor immediately. X-Rays or tests may have to be done before the treatment.



There are many types of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common type in old people. It affects cartilage that pads the bones. It wears and mild pain, stiffness etc. happens while bending or walking. In worse conditions, pain will be there during rest or even sleeping.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a very bad condition when any injury will lead to inflammation in joints also. It is autoimmune. The severe pain and swelling may occur in many joints together. Even movement of the joint will be difficult and people with RA will be feverish or tired.

Gout is very painful and is due to uric acid deposit in joints and connective tissue. Swelling, pain, stiffness etc. can happen when certain foods like anchovies, liver, shellfish etc. are eaten. It mostly affects hands and legs-ankle, knee, elbow, hand etc.

Reactive Arthritis is an inflammation in joints that occurs like a reaction to some other infection in the body. It is also known as Reiter’s Syndrome. Other symptoms for this are redness, conjunctivitis, urethritis etc.
Psoriatic Arthritis is for the patients who have psoriasis. Other kinds of arthritis are ankylosing spondylitis that affects the spine and arthritis in temporomandibular joint. (jaw joining skull).
